Twilight Surfer
Early morning in Sumatra with the Oakley team. We jumped in the water before the sun came up to capture some flash photos. Pro surfer Adriano De Souza dropped in on a larger wave during a nice set. At that point I knew I should move to get out of the impact zone but I didn’t want to miss the quick shot. I am so glad I stayed where I was because I scored this amazing angle with the sunrise in the background. But my intuition was correct — just after this photo was taken I got pounded by the wave. It was worth it for this gem of a photo.

I think this place - Tomoca - is the best coffee shop in the world. Really, I haven’t of course visited all coffee shops in the world, but this one is really, really good. It’s all about coffee - you can smell the coffee when you approach the place from the outside, and they have different kinds of Ethiopian coffee that’s roasted and ground in the shop, and everybody in there just seems to be true coffee-lovers. It also feels a bit like you’re suddenly in 1920’s Italy when you walk in there, even though you’re in central Addis Ababa. This might have something to do with the influence the Italians had during their short-lived colonization of Ethiopia in 1930’s. On another note, Ethiopia is the only African country that has not (really) been colonized and the only country in Africa whose army managed to lead a successful counterattack on the Italian army in 1935. This happened in Mekele in Northern Ethiopia and it’s knows as the “Christmas Offensive.

As mentioned a few times before, Ethiopia is world-famous for its world-class coffee. There are 4 places in Ethiopia where coffee is grown and the coffee from those 4 places is renowned as some of the world’s best coffee. One place, which is where coffee is originally from, is in Western Ethiopia and it’s called Kafa, and the word ‘coffee’ is (of course) derived from that word, and so is the Danish “kaffe”, the French “café”, etc. Harar is also one of those 4 places. I went to Nure Roasted Coffee Factory in the city, and it was amazing. The whole place smelled of fresh coffee, and they roast and grind the coffee themselves in there. I bought a kilo of beans for less than 8 USD, which is very expensive for coffee in Ethiopia.
